How can I reduce the running costs of my pool?

I am sure that everyone agrees that electricity costs are now spiraling out of control, not only here in Cyprus but worldwide too. With the high price of oil and the recent Mari   explosion, it seems that electricity charges are not going to drop anytime soon.

Fact: The most expensive running cost of your pool is the pump

A pool pump on an average size pool, running for the recommended 8 hours per day in the summer can cost up €90 per month to run.  So what can you do to reduce this? The obvious answer is to run your pool for less hours. I know that many people do this but this is not advised by pool professionals, and can in fact cause problems such as green or cloudy water, ear infections, or worse. The water in your pool has to be turned over and filtered at least twice per day in the summer, any less is not advisable; especially when the bather load is at its highest.

So what is the answer?

 The answer is to dramatically reduce your electricity costs but still have a clean and safe swimming environment.  Thankfully this can now be accomplished with some very clever pumps.

A more expensive system than the variable speed pump but the advantage of running your pool pump for free is definitely inviting.  Photovoltaic solar panels create enough electricity to operate a DC powered motor which turns over your pool water without any extra costs.  The Government also runs a renewable energy program that will refund 55% of the cost of the panels.

Both of the systems above will save you money in the long term, but the environmental advantages are also clear.
