Aqua Blue Salt Chlorinators

Written by Administrator Monday, 05 September 2011 15:19

Our natural salt chlorinators are the safest, most economical, natural and environment friendly purification systems for swimming pools, Jacuzzis and spas.

The chlorinators convert natural salt table or authentic Dead-Sea minerals into chlorine to purify the water while eliminating the negative side effects associated with traditional chlorine.

aquablueSalt chlorinators sanitize pools up to 120 cubic meters. A low concentration of salt is converted through an electrolysis cell to natural chlorine that kills algae and bacteria, and then reverts back into sodium chloride. This sanitation process in continuous, eliminating the need to add any extra disinfecting chemicals to your pool.
There are 2 Main components:

  1. The Controller - accountable for monitoring, alerting and controlling the automated chlorine production process.
  2. The Cell - responsible for the electrolysis process – the transformation of natural salt into active chlorine.

The Controller

The AquaBlue PSC-3.6 Controller maintains the pool water at a constant healthy level. A simple boost button enables 24 hour operation at full capacity – perfect for the occasional pool party!

Unique Features

  • Easy operation
  • 7 levels of chlorine production (10 - 100%)
  • Operates smoothly at wide salinity ranges of up to  8000pm
  • High salinity indicator light
  • Boost button enables 24 hour operation at full capacity
  • A feeding cable and flow switch are supplied to reduce installation time
  • Main button acts as ON/OFF switch and regulates chlorine production levels
aquablue-illustration

Aquablue Cell Chlorinator

The cell is responsible for the electrolysis process of chemically transforming the natural table salt into active chlorine.

Individual steel plates are inserted into the core of the cell (the number of plates is determined by the model of the cell). Electricity is fed into the cell and the process of chemically converting the salt into active chlorine begins.  Unique technology implemented in the unit triggers a self cleaning process.

Unique Features

  • Gripping fins enable easy assembly and dismantling NO TOOLS required
  • Reinforced ribs provide extra strength, cell can withstand pressure of up to 7 bars (100 psi)
  • Unique arrangements of blades eliminates the need for high voltage or current that can be harmful to the long life performance of the cell
  • Robust transparent cell for periodic lime scale & corrosion testing without any need to dismantle the unit

Solar Blankets

Written by Administrator Thursday, 01 April 2010 10:47

Please also see our section on Covers and Rollers

Solar blankets or bubble covers come in varying degrees of efficiency. From the plain blue 200 micron, to the more effective 400 and 500 micron. Shipshape have tested most solar blankets, and have found that by purchasing the slightly more expensive 400 micron* the efficiency (and in this case related to how fast the pool heats up and how long swimming time is extended by) is greatly improved.
*Micron size relates to the thickness of the cover.

How does a solar blanket work?

Solar blankets work by allowing the suns rays to permeate through the cover during the day thus heating up the water. The thermal quality of the cover then stores most of the heat gained. The pool gradually gets warmer day by day until the desired swimming temperature has been achieved.  Solar blankets can be used without any form of pool heating or combined with a heating system. 500-micron-solar-coverWhen used in conjunction with a pool heating system running costs are greatly reduced, as most of the heat gained is stored.  Another benefit of Solar blankets is that water evaporation is drastically reduced by up to 95%.  Certain blankets incorporate extra UV stabilisers so that they can be used during the hot summer months saving you even more water and money.
Please check with Shipshape for advice on which cover is best for you.

How do I remove and replace a solar blanket?

The easiest way to remove a solar blanket is to incorporate a roller system with the cover. Shipshape offer various types of pool rollers, from the simple manual type to the more elaborate solar powered system. A roller not only eases removing and replacing the cover but it also helps to protect the cover from damage once rolled. Many rollers can be moved and stored when not in use.

When will I use a Solar Blanket?

Solar blankets are used in Spring and Autumn to store the heat gained from the sun. They can also be used in the winter if a heating system is incorporated on your pool.

Other Types of Pool Covers:
Other types of thermal pool covers are available. Although they do not offer the same solar properties as the solar blankets, they do have exceptional heat retention capabilities and are very robust.

Thermalux 6mm Foam:

Thermalux covers are made from a closed cell PE Foam, and are suitable for all heat retention purposes. Thermalux covers are extremely durable due to the strong woven polyethylene top coat, and the density of the material also helps eliminate light penetration thus reducing algae growth.

Solar Powered Slatted Cover:

A fully automatic hard slatted solar powered pool cover.  Not only does this type of cover store heat but it can be used all year round and also as a safety cover.  This cover can be installed without having to run any new cables and will open and shut at the flick of a switch.

Solar Panels

Written by Administrator Friday, 08 January 2010 13:55

Pool solar heating is a great way of increasing your swimming season. Not only is the heat gained from the sun free, but as no electric or fossil fuels are being used, your pool heating system will be eco friendly. solar_panel_diagramSolar heating is a relatively inexpensive and simple method of heating your pool. The water is pumped to the solar panels using your existing pool pump. Once the cool water passes through the solar collectors the water heats up. The warmer water is then redirected to your pool via your inlets.

Where can I place the solar panels?

The solar panels are extremely versatile, and can be placed on tiled roofs, flat roofs on purpose made frames, concrete bases or pergolas. They should be facing as due South as possible. However this is sometimes impossible; so facing the panels in a South Easterly or South Westerly direction is sometimes the only alternative. A good guide is to check the designated area to see how much direct sunlight it attracts. If it receives more than six hours of sun per day the solar system will work efficiently. Other factors to take in to consideration are the length of the pipe run, and how high the water has to be pushed from the pump house to the solar panels. Shipshape undertake an extensive site survey before carrying out any work.

How long will Solar panels extend my swimming season?

A properly installed solar system should increase your swimming time by up to five months. Although factors such as day and night time temperatures, the amount of panels used, pipe run distances etc do play a factor. On average we have found that over the past eight years, our customers have been swimming in pools with a temperature of 26°c plus from approximately mid March to early December. Considering the fact that without any pool heating or a solar blanket, most people will not use their pool until June and stop swimming at around late September. The advantages of pool solar heating are self evident.

sola_panels_fruit_tree solar_panels_in_field solar_panels_in_frames
Above are some typical Solar Panel Installations. The Cost Effective Solution

What is an Automatic Solar Valve?

An Automatic solar valve is an optional device that can be installed to a new or existing solar system. Two thermal probes are fitted; one in the water line before the solar panels, and the other is placed next to the panels themselves. When there is a differential of temperature, i.e. the panel temperature is hotter than the water temperature, the manifold for the solar system automatically opens. When the differential is reversed the valve switches off. With this system you can even pre-set the desired pool temperature, and the efficiency of the system is greatly improved. For example; during heavy cloud cover or cold conditions the panels will not operate. If they did they would actually cool the pool down.

How good are our solar panels?

Shipshape have been importing Helicol Solar Panels for the past eight years. Heliocol have been the choice of pool heating at both the Atlanta and Athens Olympic games and are also used in huge factory installations in Mexico to pre heat water. Thousands of these panels are also installed throughout the USA and Europe every year to heat domestic pools, and with the nine year factory guarantee we believe that they are the best choice of solar heating for your pool.

Heat Pumps

Written by Administrator Friday, 08 January 2010 13:55

Over the past four years Shipshape has been installing and researching the benefits of heat pumps in Cyprus. We have found that due to their low running costs, the efficiency of the unit itself, and the compact installation; heat pumps are a perfect method of heating your pool. You will see the word ‘efficient’ being used repeatedly in this pamphlet as the main factor when deciding what heating system is best suited to your needs. Due to the minimal running costs of a heat pump they are definitely a viable option.

How do heat pumps work?

A heat pump works by converting the outside temperature into heat for your pool. It achieves this by moving air via a large fan through a heater. The warm air passes over an evaporator containing liquid which boils at a very low temperature. When this liquid turns to vapour, it becomes compressed which increases the temperature by 5 or 6 times. For every unit of electricity used to run the compressor, you gain up to 6 free units of heat for your pool.heatpumpFor example: A 9Kw heat pump will only draw between 1.4Kw to 1.8Kw of electricity to heat your pool. If the average cost of electricity is € 0.20 per hour and the heat pump is running for 5 hours per day it will only cost € 1.40 per day.

A few factors have to be noted to obtain the full benefit from your heat pump. The warmer the outside temperature the more effective the system will be. Most heat pumps begin to become efficient once the outside temperature exceeds 15°c, and they work to their full potential at outside temperature of 20°c plus. We are blessed in Cyprus to have nearly 10 months of the year with average temperatures exceeding 20°c, therefore heat pumps are one of the best options to consider when evaluating the what heating system is necessary for your pool.

Where are heat pumps installed?

As heat pumps work by utilising the ambient outdoor temperature, they have to be installed outside. They can be installed away from the pump house with minimum heat loss, but most installations are placed either on to a wall bracket on the pump house, or on to a concrete base or patio. Installing a heat pump is a relatively quick and simple operation and normally just takes a morning to complete.

What size heat pump shall I install on my pool?

This all depends on the size of your pool and how long you want to extend your swimming season for. Factors such as temperatures, weather conditions and location have to be taken into consideration.  For example, a 9kW to a 12kW heat pump is suitable for a 8m x 4m pool.  We do advise a site survey to ensure the correct choice of heat pump is installed for your pool.

How long will a heat pump take to heat my pool up?

This is one of the most common questions we get asked and it is one of the most difficult to answer. Factors such as outdoor temperature, water temperature, the size of the heat pump in relation to the size of the pool all play a part. When a heat pump is installed the heat pump is left to run continuously until the desired temperature is achieved. This can take a couple of days or up to a week to reach. When the heat pump has reached its desired temperature the pool filtration can then be turned back on to the automatic setting. The internal thermostat will then govern the heat pumps operation. A recent example was mid December we installed a 16Kw heat pump on to an 8m x 4m pool. The pool temperature was 14°c. The system ran continuously for 6 days until it reached the desired temperature of 26°c. The heat pump maintained this temperature until early January when the owner returned to the UK.

Liner Replacements

Written by Administrator Monday, 29 March 2010 07:32

Fact: Pool liners do not last forever, and eventually have to be changed.

However, the question “how long should my liner last?” is far more difficult to Answer.
Type of liner, thickness, quality, general maintenance and water chemical balance are all factors in determining why a liner has only lasted a few years.

If your liner has lasted for approximately ten years but has now faded and is generally looking tatty, it is probably a good idea to start considering changing it.

If your liner is showing the same wear and tear but it is only a few years old, you may also have to replace it.
You need to consider the following 7 steps:

  1. Know the make and the origin of the liner that you are considering choosing.
There are many in the market place, however, a better quality but slightly more expensive liner will generally last longer.
Liners of European and/or Canadian origin are notably of higher standard quality.
  2. What thickness is the liner?
1.5mm is the minimum that we would use
  3. Who is going to install it?
This is very important as a well shaped liner not only looks good but will also last longer.
  4. Have your pool shell inspected once the old liner has been removed.
This is the only time that cracks can be repaired and fittings replaced without having to drain your pool again.
Saving money at this stage will only cost you more at a later date when your new liner is in!
  5. Who will be servicing your pool?
If you or a maintenance company is looking after your pool, make sure that you purchase quality pool chemicals of European Grade and make sure they are distributed correctly.
The chemical balance of your pool is correct at all times.
  6. Clean the waterline regularly with a specialist liner cleaner.
  7. Use the correct pool cleaning equipment and keep sharp objects away from the pool.

Should you need to replace your Liner it is very important that you get the best quality workmanship to provide a long life and value for money. Enquire at Shipshape for full details or send an enquiry through our Contact Page

Pumps and Filters

Pumps

How can I reduce the running costs of my pool?

I am sure that everyone agrees that electricity costs are now spiraling out of control, not only here in Cyprus but worldwide too. With the high price of oil and the recent Mari   explosion, it seems that electricity charges are not going to drop anytime soon.

Fact: The most expensive running cost of your pool is the pump

eco-pumpA pool pump on an average size pool, running for the recommended 8 hours per day in the summer can cost up €90 per month to run.  So what can you do to reduce this? The obvious answer is to run your pool for less hours. I know that many people do this but this is not advised by pool professionals, and can in fact cause problems such as green or cloudy water, ear infections, or worse. The water in your pool has to be turned over and filtered at least twice per day in the summer, any less is not advisable; especially when the bather load is at its highest.

So what is the answer?

The answer is to dramatically reduce your electricity costs but still have a clean and safe swimming environment.  Thankfully this can now be accomplished with some very clever pumps.

Variable Speed pool pump
Shipshape have been researching these for some time and have recently discovered a remarkable new variable speed pool pump. Imagine a pump that only requires 150 Watts to operate but still turns over your pool water efficiently. (12,500lt/h) It also has faster speeds of up to 1.5hp to aid vacuuming and backwashing.  These ultra efficient pumps utilise a new technology consisting of rare earth magnets. Typically, a pool running for 8 hours per day will only cost 30c per day. (€9 per month)

Solar Powered pool pump
A more expensive system than the variable speed pump but the advantage of running your pool pump for free is definitely inviting.  Photovoltaic solar panels create enough electricity to operate a DC powered motor which turns over your pool water without any extra costs.  The Government also runs a renewable energy program that will refund 55% of the cost of the panels.

Both of the systems above will save you money in the long term, but the environmental advantages are also clear.

Shipshape supply a side range of pool pumps.  High quality and cost effective pumps which will suit any small, large, commercial or residential pool.
Designed and manufactured with quality components to ensure your pool will operate at its best.

Multi Cyclone Filter

Written by Administrator Monday, 29 March 2010 07:23

Save up to 8,300 litres of water - The unique Multi-Cyclone Filter

A New Environmentally friendly swimming pool filtration system, capable of saving more than 8,000 litres of Water a year.  It reduces filter maintenance and extends the life of the main filter unit by significantly reducing the need to backwash.

It is one of the most inventive advancements in the industry, with no moving parts and no filter unit to clean or replace. On average, the annual backwashing of a conventional pool filter system looses 8,500 litres of water, whereas, the water waste from the Multi-Cyclone unit is only 200 litres a year - a significant saving of 8,300 litres of water.

How it works

The Multi-Cyclone uses centrifugal force to create a vortex effect to separate the pool water and sediment, which is then collected in a special easy-clean container. cyclone_filter Used as a pre-filter and attached in-line between a standard pump and the main sand or cartridge water filter, the Multi Cyclone can be installed during the construction of a pool or retro fitted to an existing system.  Powered by the water itself, incoming water is passed over a diverter plate and enters the 16 multiple hydro cyclones that are designed to generate a strong centrifugal effect.

As the water swirls, sediment of up to 100 microns in size is spun out against the wall of the hydro-cyclone’s sediment bowl and spirals down into a sump, where it is trapped.  At the same time, the cleaned water spirals upwards through the unit and back into the pipe leading to a pool’s main filter unit.

Laboratory tests showed that the Multi-Cyclone can remove up to 80% of sediment in a 3 hour period.  The captured sediment is removed simply by opening a valve and flushing out the bowl, only 15 litres of water.

Aquasprite

Written by Kerry Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:28

‘Your pool water - good enough to drink’

Do you want to make your swimming pool a much healthier place to exercise and less costly to maintain sparkling clean water?

aquaspriteThe aquasprite™ offers safe, monitored and economical operation whilst effectively purifying your pool water with a greatly reduced use of potentially harmful chemicals.
It is one of the most advanced swimming pool water purifiers in the world.

What are the benefits of the Aquasprite?

  1. Aquasprite™ creates crystal clear, allergy free water of drinking quality.
  2. It will eliminate green, yellow and black algae and the use of flocculants, water clarifiers and algaecide.
  3. Chlorine related skin rashes and health issues are reduced including asthma attacks, red and sore eyes, bleached or damaged hair.
  4. Swimming costumes and clothing no longer suffer from chemical damage.
  5. Calcium build up in the pool is reduced ensuring that the tiles or liner remain clean and shiny and pool cleaning much faster and easier.
  6. Keep the swimming pool easily within the specification of the EEC, and many other International regulatory authorities.

Why use Silver?

SILVER has long been known as a bacterial killer and used extensively by the medical profession before the introduction of antibiotics, and COPPER is recognized as one of the best algaecide killers known to man.
electrodesIt was NASA that designed an ionization system for their Apollo flights, using copper silver electrodes to purify their water. We have used the same technique to kill the bacteria and algae found in swimming pools.

How does it all work?

Safe controllable low voltage DC current is transmitted from the aquasprite™ Control unit to special anodes fitted in the water chamber where electrolysis takes place, causing solutions of Copper, Silver and other minerals to form in the water. These are called ions (atoms), hence the name “Ionic Purifiers”. These ions are positively charged (+) and are created in billions each second. All bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi spores are negatively charged (-) therefore the ions are attracted to the cells of contaminants, the copper ion damages the cell wall, allowing the silver ion to then penetrate and destroy the cell.

  • Copper and Silver ions are pH neutral, non-corrosive and have no effect on the human body in the concentration used to treat the water.
  • Minerals with none of the side effects of chlorine purify the water naturally.
  • The ions are not oxidising agents like chlorine, so they do not burn up body fats, hair, and other organic matter. They only purify water and control algae and fungal development. Hence a small amount of chlorine is still required to burn off this organic matter.
  • When using the Aquasprite™ unit, the control of the current is automatic and self regulating, compensating for the conductivity and flow rate of the water.

Rather then sell you unnecessary chemicals, Shipshape will always advise you on the correct way to deal with problems with your swimming pool or spa.

Chlorine

Chlorine is the oldest and most popular method of swimming pool sanitation, used in the majority of commercial pools such as water parks, hotels and public pools. In some European countries chlorine is still the only recognised pool water sanitiser and is compulsory in all public and private pools.
Chlorine is available in different forms:
Tablets; comprised of 90% chlorine and slow-dissolving, these are to be either placed in the skimmers or in a dispenser.
Granular; available in different grades and strengths. European chlorine is generally considered to be the best, although Chinese chlorine is the most cost-effective.
3-in-1 or 5-in-1 Tablets; comprised of chlorine, algaecide, floculant, and other sanitisers. These tablets also contain cyanuric acid, which is a stabiliser for chlorine and should not be confused with pH- (sodium bisulphate).

chemicals

It is essential that chlorine is used correctly, as under- or over-chlorinating a pool can lead to problems. The levels of chlorine should be kept between 1-1.5ppm. Chlorine will only work efficiently if the pH of the pool water is kept between 7.2 – 7.6; any lower and the chlorine will burn off too quickly, any higher and it will work less effectively.

pH Stabilisers

Shipshape also supply pH+ (Soda Ash) and pH- (Dry Acid) in various quantities to maintain your pool water to the recommended pH level of 7.2 - 7.6.

Algaecides

Algaecides are used to treat or prevent the growth of algae in pools. They exist in both liquid and granular forms. The most common form of algae is green, but forms of black, mustard and pink are also common.
As algae can spread rapidly, it is advisable to treat even the smallest bout of algae growth with the relevant algaecide. Algaecides work most effectively when the pH in your pool is between 7.2 and 7.6.

Floculants (Water Clarifiers)

Floculants are used to clear cloudy or milky water. They coagulate the extremely small particles which cannot be filtered, creating larger particles which sink to the bottom of the pool to be vacuumed or are caught by the filter. Floculants can be found in liquid or tablet form.

Other Pool Chemicals

A wide variety of specialised products for pools and spas, such as scum line cleaners, bromine, calcium controllers, water de-foamers, aromatherapy oils and more are also available at all our stores.

Covers & Rollers

Heat Retaining Covers

astral_stainless_steel_rollerProbably the best investment made after installing swimming pool heating is a good quality heat-retention cover. To improve the efficiency of your heating system and to save money on fuel costs it is imperative that you invest in one of these. Would you run central heating in your house with all the windows and doors open?

Solar Covers

Solar covers, or bubble covers, are a cheap and efficient way of retaining heat. They also have the advantage of allowing sunlight through and trapping the heat, which will further raise the temperature of your pool. In fact, many people use solar covers without any heating as they will extend the swimming season by up to 6 weeks.

Effectively Covered

The  400micron Anti Evaporation cover is manufactured from top-grade materials, with bigger bubbles to allow through maximum heat, and a UV inhibitor which protects the cover from the harmful effects of the sun. It is also 23% more efficient than standard blue solar covers. These covers can be cut to fit any shape or size of pool, and come with a free solar protection sheet which will prolong the life of your cover.

Thermaquilt Covers

The Thermaquilt heat retention cover is made from polyethylene closed cell foam, laminated to provide maximum heat retention and minimal heat loss. These covers are welded to fit the dimensions of any swimming pool, and come in three styles:
Plain: Edges are not hemmed, enabling the cover to be trimmed on site if necessary
Edged: Cover is factory-hemmed on all edges
Super Deluxe: Hemmed on three edges, with the Swordfish leading edge assembled on the remaining side.
Thermaquilt covers can only be used in conjunction with a heating system, as they block sunlight out completely but have tremendous heat retaining properties. Although more expensive than solar covers, they have a longer life.

Winter Covers

The majority of swimming pool owners choose to shut down, or ‘winterise’ their pool during those months when it is just too cold to swim. Over these months, you will need to protect your pool from dirt, leaves and other contaminants with a winter cover.

The Winter Classic cover is European made and custom-fitted to the size and shape of your pool.

Made from woven polyethylene and held taut with stainless steel springs, the winter cover allows rainwater to permeate through, therefore preventing sagging which may occur with other non-perforated materials, but at the same time keeps out dirt and dust.

This material also incorporates UV and chemical resistance to safeguard from the effects of the sun and pool chemicals, and a bag is provided to store your cover safely during the swimming season.

What Type Of Heating?

Written by Administrator Friday, 08 January 2010 13:55

With over 300 days of sunshine in Cyprus per year, you would think that you could swim in warm water most of the time. The real fact is that without a suitable heating system or solar blanket, you will only be able to swim comfortably for just a few months. A swimming pool is one of the largest  investments that you will make, so extending the swimming season is important. Let’s face it, you still have to clean and chemicalise your pool, so you may as well use it to its full potential. Whether it is only for a few extra weeks with the aid of a solar blanket, or all year round with the use of a tailor made heating system; with the correct installation we can extend your swimming time and also allow you to enjoy your investment to its full potential.

There are many different types of Pool Heating on the market today and they will all heat your pool. The main factors when deciding are:

  • How long do you want to extend your swimming time?

  • Where am I going to install the system?

  • How much is the initial cost going to be?

  • What are the running costs going to be?*

*This is by far the most important factor when deciding what heating system is best suited for you. I have witnessed many times before an expensive pool heating system being installed, only to hear that the owner has only ever used it for a couple of weeks because the running costs, are exorbitant. With modern heating systems today this does not have to be the case.
Over the past ten years Shipshape have been researching and installing the most efficient heating systems on the market. Within this leaflet you will find what we recommend, from simple solar blankets to the most up to date Heat Pumps.

More on Arctic?

Arctic and Coyote spas are manufactured in Canada, and are therefore built specifically to endure the harshest climates, be it freezing Canadian winters or hot Mediterranean summers as we experience in Cyprus. Their unique methods of insulation mean that not only do they conserve energy, but identifying and fixing problems is a far easier and less time-consuming process. Arctic and Coyote offer a wide range of additional extras, such as Therapy Air jets, Arctic Ozone water purification and even the Aquatremor Sonic Massage/CD player; all of which can be fitted as additions to your spa. New spa technology is constantly being developed, and Arctic Spas is the first company to make it possible for such features to be retro-fitted even after the spa has been commissioned.
Such is their belief in their product, Arctic Spas provide unbelievable warranties of 5 or 10 years on parts and labour, and  lifetime on the shell.
All our service staff are fully trained to carry out all repairs and upgrades on Arctic and Coyote Spas.
